FANR Board of Management Holds Third Session of the Year

On 21 June, the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) Board of Management held its third meeting of the year to review FANR’s accomplishments and its strategic and operational plans for 2016.

Senior FANR management provided the Board with updates to key FANR activities, including the status of its review of the Operating License Application for Units 1 and 2 at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, now under construction in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi. Ambassador Hamad Alkaabi, UAE Permanent Representative to the IAEA, attended the meeting in his role of a deputy chairman of FANR’s Board of Management, which is responsible for managing the authority.

In addition, the Board received a briefing on the UAE’s implementation of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources, which calls upon nations to ensure that they have effective regulatory systems to oversee the management and protection of radioactive sources. The UAE made a political commitment to the Code of Conduct in 2013, and FANR has participated in the IAEA meetings to develop the Code further.

The Board also received updates on the Memoranda of Understanding that FANR has completed with key UAE agencies.

The meeting was led by Board of Management Chairman H.E Abdulla Al Suwaidi.
