Building Capacity for Safe and Secure Nuclear Energy Programmes

From 26 October to 6 November 2015, officials of the UAE’s nuclear regulator - Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) - participated in the regional training course on the State Systems of Accounting for and Control of Nuclear Material for newcomer countries held in Daejeon, Republic of Korea. This training course specifically offers capacity building measures in safeguards implementation at a national level.

The regional training  workshop organized by the IAEA was aimed at promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy under the international non-proliferation regime. It provided participants from 12 nuclear newcomer countries in the ARASIA region with a profound knowledge and understanding of the non-proliferation regime and skills required for safeguards implementation by national State Systems of Accounting for and Control of Nuclear Materials (SSACs).

During the training course, FANR officials shared their experiences on their cooperation with the Federal Customs Authority and other local Customs entities on import and export control area. They emphasized that the training course was highly beneficial in learning international best practices and joining the IAEA’s Learning Management Systems online platform for knowledge and information exchange.
