UAE Ambassador Speaks about the Future of Nuclear Power

At the 4th European Union (EU) Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Conference hosted by Brussels, Belgium, from 11 to 12 November, the UAE Ambassador Hamad Alkaabi, Permanent Representative to the IAEA, discussed the future of the nuclear power.

“To understand the future of nuclear power, we have to look at the numbers we have today - and today’s world - in terms of number of reactors, which constitutes over 400 operating today. In 2014, the electricity share exceeded 11% of the world’s electricity,” noted Ambassador.

In his remarks, Ambassador Alkaabi highlighted that “today, nuclear power is considered as a clean energy source that actually competes with all the other sources because of the rate that you can deploy nuclear power.

In fact, some recent studies suggested that it is the largest and maybe the only source of low-carbon electricity that will be a base load in the near future.”

“Transparency becomes very essential.” he also emphasized, “It is important to ensure always that public engagement is part of any programme.”

The Conference brought together more than 250 governmental and non-governmental officials from both EU Member States and other countries involved in countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destructions and other forms of weapons, as well as in promoting disarmament.
