On the last day of a weeklong General Conference, the UAE’s senior Regulator co-chaired a plenary meeting aimed at strengthening international cooperation through global coordination and collaboration towards continues improvements to nuclear safety and security.
Established in 2010, the Regulatory Cooperation Forum (RCF) of senior regulators from IAEA Member States and international organizations, involved in nuclear power met on 21 September, in Vienna, to discuss its activities and reach an agreement on the way forward for 2013.
Facilitated and promoted by the IAEA, the RCF is aimed to improve collaboration and coordination for regulatory capacity building among Member States with established nuclear power programmes as well as those considering the introduction or expansion of such programmes.
With an already founded nuclear regulatory regime and ongoing infrastructure development, the UAE actively engages in sharing regulatory knowledge and experience towards enhancing nuclear safety globally.
Mr. W. Travers, Director General for UAE’s nuclear safety authority and RCF Vice Chair welcomed meeting participants with the backgrounds and objectives of the regulatory cooperation forum, and facilitated the meeting discussions.
This year’s RCF has discussed challenges faced by the forum and its accomplishments, as well as encouraged other countries committed to the implementation of nuclear power, to join the organization.
Since its establishment in 2009, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), joined the RCF along with other 18 other IAEA Member States to assist nuclear ‘newcomers’ in the development of independent and robust nuclear safety regulatory institutions.
RCF Background
Previous discussions between senior regulators of nuclear power worldwide regarding ways to improve coordination of regulatory support offered cooperation through bilateral or multilateral arrangements.
Since the establishment of a forum, more effective coordination and collaboration in building national regulatory capacity is provided by advanced countries to embarking countries.
