Ministers Mark 20th Anniversary of the CTBT

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the opening for signature of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). This important occasion brought together leaders and policymakers in Vienna to discuss and renew their commitment to the Treaty. Since 1996, the CTBT has served as a platform for global nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, and thus far has paved the way for broadly and effectively deterring nuclear tests.
On 13-14 June, UAE Ambassador Hamad Alkaabi, Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reaffirmed his country’s support for the CTBT and its early entry into force at the Ministerial Meeting convened for the 20th anniversary of the CTBT in Vienna, Austria.

Over a hundred and twenty delegations attended, representing States Signatories, non-Signatory States and Observer States, International Organizations, as well as members of civil society. During the meeting, these high-level delegates discussed and renewed their commitment to the Treaty. They also deliberated on challenges faced today for the entry into force of the CTBT.

“There is still unfinished business. It is unfortunate that the CTBT has not yet entered into force,” said Ambassador Alkaabi in his address. (Full text)

“It is only through collective cooperation that the international community can create a world without the threat of nuclear weapons.”

“Subscribing to the CTBT is an important step for States to demonstrate their genuine commitment to nuclear disarmament.”

“UAE commends the CTBTO for the significant progress in building-up the Treaty’s verification regime.”

The high level meeting took place along the margins of the Preparatory Commission of the biennial Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), which was resumed from 14-15 June. The Preparatory Commission is the policy making organ of the Organization. The UAE participated in the meeting, which concluded important budgetary and administrative decisions.
