Diplomats and Legal experts meet to review Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage

On 23 May, a Workshop on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage introduced diplomats and legal experts from Member States to the international legal regime to provide compensation for damage in case of a nuclear or radiological incident.
The Workshop was co-organized with the support of the International Expert Group on Nuclear Liability (INLEX) and hosted at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

The UAE Permanent Missions’ Diplomat joined the Workshop to discuss the international instruments adopted under the auspices of the IAEA and current achievements of the global nuclear liability regime. The assembly provided a forum to exchange information on challenges, concerns or legal and policy issues that respective countries may have with the existing international regime of civil liability for nuclear damage.

The UAE has set a good example by concluding all international legal instruments associated with nuclear liability. In particular, the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage (CSC), under the auspices of IAEA, is a valuable additional step towards establishing a global nuclear liability regime. The Agency highlighted the UAE’s efforts in concluding this Convention, which is instrumental to enhancing regional and global cooperation.

UAE’s leadership towards steady civil liability regime

On 7 July 2014, the UAE took the lead as a newcomer by joining the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage (CSC). The CSC is an important international treaty that provides the basis for a global liability regime and compensation for damage caused by a nuclear accident. The UAE has previously joined a set of international instruments that forms international nuclear liability regime, which includes the 1963 Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage, as amended by the 1997 Protocol, and the Joint Protocol Relating to the Application of the Vienna Convention and the Paris Convention.
