The UAE had actively participated by delegation comprising of senior officials from the relevant national entities.
The conference, attended by more than 1300 participants from 123 IAEA Member States, governmental and non-governmental organizations, convened to analyse past and current efforts, and future challenges to ensuring effective and sustainable nuclear security worldwide.
Headed by H.E. Ambassador Hamad Alkaabi, UAE Permanent Representative to the IAEA, the UAE delegation included senior officials of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).
H.E. Ambassador Hamad Alkaabi delivered a national statement highlighting UAE’s efforts in the area of Nuclear Security.
“Strengthening nuclear security is a priority in light of the expansion of the use of nuclear and radioactive materials globally, and taking into consideration the increased threat of nuclear terrorism. The risk of malicious acts using nuclear or radioactive materials remains high and serious threat,” said Ambassador Alkaabi.
“As evidenced by its support for a number of non-proliferation and security initiatives, and international instruments aimed at limiting the spread of nuclear weapons, the UAE considers non-proliferation to be of the highest importance,” he added.

On the same day, participating delegations agreed on the Ministerial Declaration. The declaration will provide the IAEA with a strong basis for future work in the area of nuclear security and its efforts in enhancing nuclear security worldwide. It will serve as an important input for the preparation of the IAEA's next Nuclear Security Plan for 2014-2017.
The UAE delegation also participated in various panel discussions addressing main themes and topics of the conference, including presentation of a paper on the UAE’s experience as an embarking nuclear country.
