UAE Hosts and Chairs IFNEC Executive Committe Annual Meeting in Abu Dhabi


On October 24, 2013, the United Arab Emirates hosted and chaired fourth annual Executive Committee Ministerial Meeting of the International Framework for Nuclear Energy Cooperation (IFNEC) in Abu Dhabi to review IFNEC activities for the past year.

 
 
The IFNEC Executive Committee, comprised of high-level officials, meets annually to strengthen cooperation between member states and concerned international organizations to support the peaceful use of nuclear in a way that meets the highest standards of safety, security and non-proliferation.
On behalf of the United Arab Emirates Government, H.E. Ambassador Hamad Alkaabi, UAE Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), chaired the executive meeting. Convened in Abu Dhabi, the 2013 IFNEC Executive Committee Meeting was opened by H.E. Dr. Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
 
This year‘s Executive Committee finalized a series of activities/outcomes including discussion of report of the IFNEC Finance Workshop held on October 22 in Abu Dhabi.
 
The meeting discussed a broad range of activities and recommendations, including those received from the Chair of the IFNEC Steering Group and the Co-Chairs of the Reliable Nuclear Fuel Services Working Group and the Infrastructure Development Working Group. The activities were reviewed by the participating countries at the Executive Committee meeting, which further gave directions to the IFNEC Working Groups for future work.
 
Highlighting the importance of the event, H.E. Ambassador Hamad Alkaabi said „The UAE’s hosting of this high-level meeting reflects the country’s aspiration and its successful efforts to play a vital role in the development of a strong framework for international cooperation to support the peaceful use of nuclear energy, in a transparent approach based on best international standards.“
The Executive Committee was concluded by issuing a joint statement highlighting the accomplishments of EFNEC Working Groups towards global expansion of nuclear power in a safe and secure manner.
 
Participation in this meeting was of high-level officials, from the IFNEC member states and observing countries, as well as permanent IFNEC Observer organizations.

About the IFNEC
 
The International Framework for Nuclear Energy Cooperation (IFNEC), formerly the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP), is a partnership of countries aiming to ensure that new nuclear initiatives meet the highest standards of safety, security and non-proliferation.
Today the International Framework consists of 32 participants, in addition to 31 observer countries, and 3 international Observer organizations. The last Executive Committee meeting was held in Morocco in 2012.
