The Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) entered today into a grant agreement with the organizations Atomic Reporters and the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) to implement a project aimed at enhancing journalists´ understanding and coverage of nuclear-related issues.

The agreement was signed on 16 April 2014 at the UAE Mission to the IAEA offices in Vienna by H.E. Ambassador Hamad Alkaabi, Permanent Representative to the IAEA, Elena Sokova, Director of the VCDNP, and Peter Reckwood of the Atomic Reporters organization.

The project titled “Training workshops for Journalists from the Middle East on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament issues” will provide training and educational opportunities on nuclear-related issues through the contribution by the UAE Government for selected journalists from the region.

On the occasion, Ambassador Alkaabi reiterated that “UAE commitment to non-proliferation and disarmament continues through this education initiative”.

“Educating and training journalists on nuclear non-proliferation is important to global progress on such issues,” he added.

The scope of the project will include convening workshops that will cover key issues related to nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear disarmament, nuclear security, nuclear safety and other issues linked to nuclear technology.
