UAE Participates at CNS’ Second Extraordinary Meeting

The UAE delegation, along with the 74 States that are party to the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS), joined the CNS' Second Extraordinary Meeting and the Organizational Meeting for the Sixth Review Meeting to analyse lessons learned from the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in March of 2011.

 
 
This extraordinary meeting took place from 27 to 31 August 2012, at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria.
 
The decision to hold an extraordinary meeting was made by Contracting Parties in light of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in order to assess its aftermath and to further enhance the effectiveness of the Convention.
 
The UAE delegation comprised of high-level officials of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), the National Crisis and Emergency Management Authority (NCEMA), and was headed by Ambassador Hamad Alkaabi, UAE Permanent Representative to the IAEA.

Together with ten Contracting Parties (i.e. Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Republic of Korea, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America), the UAE contributed to the development of a revised guidance documents based on UAE and others proposals.
 
UAE submitted its second national report to the CNS extraordinary meeting highlighting UAE efforts in light of early lessons learned of Fukushima accident.
 
The UAE joined the Convention on Nuclear Safety on 29 October 2009. The Convention, which has 75 Contracting Parties, was created following the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl accidents.
 
The accident at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was the subject of significant discussion and the participant countries indicated a strong commitment to assess the accident and act to enhance nuclear safety.

The parties gather every three years at a Review Meeting to present their national safety measures and respond to questions from others.
